Why Planer Snipe Really Happens (and Why the Classic Tricks Are Workarounds, Not Fixes)
Ask ten woodworkers how to stop planer snipe and you'll get the same list every time: lift the board as it enters and exits, run a sacrificial board first, butt your boards end to end, build longer infeed and outfeed tables. What's actually happening inside your planer

Lifting the leading or trailing edge. When you lift the board slightly as it enters or exits, you're manually counteracting the geometry change caused by the machine flexing. It genuinely helps. But it depends entirely on operator feel, every single pass, on every single board. Lift a hair too much or too little and the result changes. It's a skill, not a solution.
Sacrificial boards. Running a scrap board in ahead of your workpiece, and another behind it, keeps both rollers loaded the entire time your good board is in the cut. The machine never changes flex states, so your workpiece never sees snipe. This is the most reliable trick in the book, and it works precisely because it holds the machine in one load condition. The price: you burn scrap stock, you handle three boards instead of one, and you do it forever.
Butting boards end to end. Same principle as sacrificial boards. The rollers stay engaged across the whole batch, so only the first and last board in the chain get snipe. Great for production runs, useless for one board.
Infeed and outfeed tables. Long support tables reduce board tilt and seesaw, which removes one contributor to uneven cutting. Worth having. But they do nothing about roller pressure or machine flex, which is why a planer with beautiful tables still snipes.
Every one of these tricks manages the symptom: the load change at entry and exit. Each does it with labor, material, or attention, and each has to be repeated on every board, forever.
